General Questions 📚
What is a Bios Urn?
A biodegradable urn that holds cremation ashes in a lower chamber and a seed or small plant in the upper chamber, so a living memorial can grow over time.
How does it work?
Place ashes in the base, add your chosen seed or sapling above, then plant the urn in soil. The urn breaks down naturally and supports healthy root development.
Who is it for?
We offer two versions—one for human ashes and one for pet ashes (dogs, cats, and other pets).
Can I plant it in a pot?
Yes. Choose a deep, well-drained pot (at least 30–40 cm for small shrubs; larger for trees) with good compost and drainage.
Can I plant it indoors?
Yes—use a large planter and choose an indoor-suitable plant (see our Planting Guide). Most trees prefer outdoor conditions once established.
Planting & Care 🌱
What should I plant?
UK-friendly choices include oak, cherry blossom, silver birch, rowan, hawthorn, or flowering options like lavender, hydrangea, and lilac. For indoor/patio: peace lily, rubber plant, rosemary, bay laurel. See our Planting Guide for more ideas.
When is the best time to plant?
Generally spring or autumn in the UK, when temperatures are moderate and rainfall helps establishment. Potted indoor plantings can be done year-round.
Will ashes harm the seedling?
The urn’s design separates the ashes from the seed/sapling initially, supporting germination and early growth while the urn breaks down gradually.
How much of the ashes will fit?
A standard adult’s ashes (human urn) or a typical pet’s ashes (pet urn) will fit. You can also use a portion and store the remainder respectfully.
Do I need to add soil or compost?
Yes—use a good quality compost and follow your plant’s needs. Many trees prefer well-drained soil; moisture-loving plants prefer richer, moist soils.
What if my plant doesn’t take?
It happens. You can gently replant with a new seedling in the same spot or pot. The urn remains biodegradable and safe.
